Amazon Lily - Bulb
The bulb should be planted in a large pot. Choose a pot with one or more holes in the base and layer the bottom with pot shards or clay pellets. Use a normal potting compost and plant at 3-4 cm. Water immediately after planting and stand the pot in a dish in the living room out of the full sun.
Eucharis amazonica on the patioThe plant is suitable for a shady spot on the patio or decking in the summer months but if the temperature drops below 13°C the Amazon Lily must be brought indoors.
Eucharis amazonica is native to the tropical rainforests of Middle America such as can be found in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. The flowers slightly resemble the daffodil but hang down to avoid catching water in the humid jungles. It has beautifully dark green glossy leaves. Amazon lilies grow amongst the plants on the forest floor of the tropical jungles and so appreciate shade and a humid atmosphere. As Eucaris amazonica is also a sturdy plant it is very popular as a house plant!
The Amazon Lily is a sturdy plant that will give you years of pleasure. Water once a week and feed monthly during flower formation. Pot up once a year (following a period of rest) in fresh potting compost.
Forcing the Eucharis amazonicaThese plants require a rest period of 4 months (no feed, only a little water and less light) at room temperature (20°C), followed by a cool period of 5 weeks in an unheated area of around 10-15°C. It can then be moved to the light of the living room and the plant will form a flower stalk and bloom within 3 months. Plant food may be given again during this period. After flowering, the same process can be repeated to encourage and achieve several flowering periods in a year.
