Hydrangea 'Spike Blue' - Shrub

Make sure the root ball of the Hydrangea is well-moistened by soaking in a bucket of lukewarm water before planting. Prepare a suitable hole in good, loose soil and plant the root ball of the Hydrangea at the correct depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. This plant grows well in a large pot. Make sure that there are holes in the base to allow for adequate drainage.

Hydrangea macrophylla grows best in fairly moist, humus-rich soil. Improve your garden soil by adding some compost to it. This plant grows well in full sun as long as the soil isn’t too dry and also does well in a shady or semi-shady area. The soil should be moist if planting in a pot, but make sure there is good water drainage otherwise the plant may die.

The flowers of this Hydrangea macrophylla are very special. The rounded flower-heads are made up of individual florets which have decorative fringed petals. They are green when they first open changing colour as they mature. Hydrangeas ‘Spike Blue’ looks fantastic in a flower arrangement.

Water your Hydrangea regularly during dry periods as dry soil is not tolerated very well. Between March and July for an extra rich bloom, add plant food monthly when watering. Provide cow manure early in the year.

The hydrangea flowers, bloom on stems that were formed in the previous year. If you prune during the spring, no flowers will appear. Pruning is not absolutely necessary unless the plant becomes too large. If you are pruning, remove approximately 1/3 of all stems. You will have fewer flowers during that year, but the flowers will bloom normally during the second year. Completely prune all dead stems. Carefully cut off all dead flowers during the winter, leaving the buds on the upper part of their stems.
