Yellow Chilean Jasmine - Plant
The Mandevilla is a pot based climber that will thrive in a large planter on your patio or decking. Use a pot with holes in the base, and a layer of pot shards or clay pellets for good drainage. Use normal potting compost perhaps mixed with some extra peat. Part fill the pot and plant the root ball at the correct depth. Fill up with more compost and press firmly down. Mandevilla requires a sunny spot.
Using Mandevilla with other plantsThe Chilean Jasmine can also be grown directly in the garden up beside a fence or climbing frame. An exceptionally lovely combination would be planted alongside a passion flower (Passiflora).
Mandevilla is a star amongst pot plants. A climbing plant from South America, the Chilean Jasmine has gorgeous exotic flowers. The vines can grow to 3 metres with flowers that bloom from summer to well into autumn, spreading their subtle scent. The Mandevilla is recognisably a member of the Apogynaceae family and not unlike the Periwinkle. It is valued plant for its decorative shiny, dark green leaves.
The Mandevilla laxa is synonymous with the Dipladenia laxa.
The Chilean Jasmine requires quite a lot of water - preferably rain water as this holds less lime. The root ball should always be moist and on warm summer days you should water daily. Feed the Mandevilla very regularly - add Phostrogen to the watering can when watering. We also advise spraying the Chilean Jasmine often as it prefers high humidity. Regularly tie shoots to the climbing frame. Cut back any shoots growing above the top or train them downwards. Cut back by about half after flowering.
Keeping Mandevilla over the winterLong shoots should be somewhat curtailed in the autumn and the plant requires less water. Mandevilla is not hardy but can handle 6-12 degrees Celcius in the winter for it to survive. The root ball can then be allowed to dry out a little. Water your Mandevilla more when spring arrives and your Chilean Jasmine can once more be placed outdoors, day and night from about mid-May.
